Ok, SharePod can now edit track properties (title, artist, album etc) and those changes show up on the iPod. And iTunes doesn't have a problem with it either.
Where the new protection kicks in I think is when we add or remove songs, so thats next up :)

I would like to see a facility for dupe checking. I have a basic heuristic I use, sorting on artist, album, title, length, bitrate that gets the worst offenders. I suppose a more complete hashing solution would be best, but for now, perhaps a simple method of viewing (possible) dupes and selecting n-1 members of each dupe set for deletion...

I have noticed something today and I think it may help you to create a method to unlock the music library in iPhone.
Today I try to copy some songs to my iPhone 3Gs with my second computer(which is not the original one sync that computer). However I don't want to erase all songs in my iPhone. So I use "SwapTunes" to backup my iTunes Library. However if I recreate a new library in my iPhone, some apps from app store can't be use. So I duplicate all folders from "iTunes_Control_2" to "iTunes_Control". I use "iPhoneBrowser" to do this. Then I replug my iPhone and check "manage my music and video manually" in iTunes. iTunes than ask me if I want to sync the library with this computer and warn. I click "OK". Then iTunes give me an error "-54". I try to replug my iPhone and I notice that ALL MUSIC ARE STILL EXIST IN MY IPHONE LIBRARY. BUT THE LIBRARY IS UNLOCKED!!! I can add/remove/edit my music files and it really make changes on my iPhone library. But:
1. It keeps on alert me for "-54" error when I make any changes with iTunes.
2. The changes is gone when I unplug and replug to iTunes. I mean some files I added is disappeared in the library but still the files actually exist iTunes_Control/Music/Fxx. Some files I deleted appears again, however the file is already removed from iTunes_Control/Music/Fxx.
My guess:
I am thinking if it is caused by the file attribute (read only). I use iPhoneBrowser to duplicate the library(copy to hard disk and copy to iPhone).

Would love for full 3.0 support, seriously need to get some songs on my iPhone and iTunes is a PITA when you just want to place some songs on it...
seriously... just give me access like the pictures folder already Apple...
but this seems like it'll be great for adding songs in a simple manner, which is just what I want

Just downloaded the 3.9.3 version of sharepod. Even though it's stated to be in "read only mode" for the iphone/ipod touch, I was able to transfer music/video with no problems.
PS - ipod touch has been working for awhile.
I am still on 2.2.1.The only reason is Sharepod. This is the best soft ever, second best is Pandora (better then iPod).
I listen audio books during my commute. So I often need to upload/ delete books in/from my iPhone. Sharepod is perfect tool for me.
